The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has recently launched a thematic report aimed at showcasing how nature-based solutions have been adopted in Mediterranean cities: “Nature based Solutions in Mediterranean cities – Rapid assessment report and compilation of urban interventions 2017-2018”.

The report aims at clarifying how nature-based solutions are currently being supported by public policies and communities and how they assist in improving liveability in urban areas. The report was intended as a survey of nature-based solution projects in the Mediterranean region, including 50 examples of nature-based solutions from 15 Mediterranean countries. This portfolio of nature-based solutions covers projects that are focused on various urban societal challenges such as green space management, climate change, human health, air quality, among others.

Various sources of research were used in the development of this thematic report, including Naturvation’s Urban Nature Atlas. The Urban Nature Atlas launched in 2018 and is currently the most comprehensive database of European cases of nature-based solutions. Showcasing 1,000 examples from across 100 European cities it provides the basis for analysis of socio-economic, urban sustainability challenges and innovation patterns associated with nature-based solutions in Europe.
